Middleham Over the Ure Bridge

MIDDLEHAM OVER THE URE BRIDGE 1829 N54o 17' 37.3" W1o 49' 6.4"

This bridge was built over the Ure River by Edward Welch (1806-68) and Joseph Aloysius Hansom (1803-82) who were partners. Hansom subsequently founded the BUILDER magazine and invented the horse cab known by his name. There is a cartouche on the bridge dated 1865 and marked Head & Ashby, Stockton on Tees which may refer to repairs or strengthening.

This unexpectedly theatrical bridge in the deep country is in fact simply an iron box supported in mid span by two pairs of iron columns but the medieval concept is delightful.
